LULLABY FOR ZIZOU
gregory heaney
And I’ve seen the face of god in the feet of Zidane, his fluidity a
metaphor for the inherent grace and nobility that’s supposedly in us all,
and anointed in Lucozade I would pray to his cleats for favor, so that I
may be shrunk down small enough to sleep in the black parts of your
eyes, a waterbed filled with spinal fluid, curled up in our blanket, with its
sweat and cigarette scent, hoping that you fall asleep soon, because I
never could sleep with the lights on.
